Suboxone Treatment

Suboxone is a medication used to treat the withdrawal symptoms of opioid use disorder from prescription painkillers and heroin. Suboxone combines Buprenorphine (which inhibits opioid receptors in the brain) and Naloxone (which prevents overdosing on Buprenorphine and other opioids) to counteract the effects of opioids and symptoms associated with withdrawal.

Signs of Suboxone Addiction and Withdrawal:

Suboxone comprises two opioids, the signs of Suboxone addiction and withdrawal are remarkably similar to heroin and prescription painkillers but with reduced effects. As you progress through your treatment plan, your doctor will slowly reduce the dosage of Suboxone to wean you off of it. This reduction may trigger withdrawal symptoms, which include:

  • Nausea/Vomiting

  • Headaches/Muscle aches

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Drug cravings

  • Fever/Chills/Sweating

The severity of these symptoms can vary on many factors, including how long the patient has been taking Suboxone treatments and the dosage amount. Side effects of Suboxone can include any number of symptoms, so it may be difficult to tell how well your body is adjusting to it for quite some time after starting treatment. To avoid complications, it is best to avoid alcohol or benzodiazepines while you are taking Suboxone.
